About us

Università degli Studi di Messina

The University of Messina (UniME) has been founded in 1548 by Pope Paul III, and it has been, since its origins, a privileged place for exchanges between different cultures, due to its geographical position in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. The University of Messina has always been characterized by the quality of research and teaching and by its international vocation, developing intense collaborative relationships with foreign universities. The passion for research is in fact at the basis of numerous agreements with universities around the world.

The University of Messina will hold the “Sea in SHELL” project, which objective is to show to the public all the sea-related research activities performed here. In such a territory the Sea has a relevant importance in various fields of everyday life, and therefore much of the work of the UniME researchers is related to the Sea. SHELL is in fact the acronym of Sea, Health, Environment, Literature, Law & economy, since the subject of the Sea is studied almost in all scientific areas. Then, the aim of the project is to clearly illustrate the role of the Sea as an important environmental framework, as an energy source, as a commercial and economic hub, as the object of many literary works and as the way through which migrants and refugees could reach other countries.

The event will take place on 24th September 2021, from 16:00 to 23:00, and it will be distributed into four different venues, including the two Scientific Campus of the University of Messina, located in the north part of the town, the marine Village of Ganzirri and the Horcynus Orca park, placed on the shore of the Strait of Messina, just at the meeting point between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Sea.
